MANITOGA, THE RUSSEL WRIGHT DESIGN CENTER – Rte 9D in Garrison, NY 845-424-3812

Mantitoga, the only 20th Century house open to the public in New York State, offers tours at 11 AM seven days a week, April through October. The tour lasts 1 ½ hours and costs $15 a person. It is the home and studio of the most famous designer of dinnerware and furniture during the 30s, 40s and 50s. 4 mile of walking paths in the 75 acres that surround the estate.

IT’S APPLE PICKING TIME IN THE HUDSON VALLEY!

SEPTEMBER THROUGH EARLY NOVEMBER The closest orchards to us are as follows:

OUTHOUSE ORCHARDS, Hardscrabble Rd. Croton Falls 914-277-3188

Weekends only 10-S PM $15 a half bushel.
Directions: Go away from the house on Hamilton, Turn left on Grand, left again on Maple (Rte 129) east. It becomes Rte 118-Go straight ’til the light at Rte 100. Make a left on 100 and go to next light at Rte 35. Turn right (east). Go to 684 North (a left turn) and proceed to exit 8. Turn right at end of ramp and proceed 1.5 miles to the orchard.

WILKENS FRUIT AND CHRISTMAS TREE FARM, 1313 White Hill Rd. Yorktown 914-245-5111

10-4:30 Weekends only. $12 a half bushel.
Directions: Follow directions above until you see the sign for Underhill Rd (On 129). Make left on Underhill to the Taconic. Get on the Taconic going North (second entrance) Exit on Rte 202. At end of ramp turn left. Go under the Taconic. Make next left and follow the signs to Wilkens Orchard.

FISHKILL FARMS, East Hook Crossroad, Hopewell Junction 845-897-4377

10-6 Daily $10 1st 1/2 bushel. $7 additional 1/2 bushels.
Directions: Go north on Rte 9 to Rte 84 East, to exit 15. At end of exit turn left onto Limekiln Rd to end (1 mile or so) Turn rt. Go 1/2 mile on your right to orchard.

PLEASE NOTE: In general, the only hazard to be concerned with when apple picking is poison ivy. Always wear long pants with socks and long sleeved shirts. Gloves are a luxury. Wash with a degreaser like Dawn when you get home. Poison ivy is a shiny three leafed vine. Avoid it.

Open year round daily noon to 5 P.M. Tour takes 20 minutes. Enjoys tastings ($4) and retail shop.
